Short Film Research

There are many reasons why you might make a short film. Some of them can include:

  • Experience - within a team and actually making the film.
  • Showreel - demonstrating your skills.
  • Partnerships - working with other people to see if you can work together in the future.
  • Kudos - find a high profile director/writer/actor who will help raise your profile.
  • Testing ideas out - try out a project on a small scale first.
  • Money - work within a certain budget to allow production costs and to pay the crew; however, this is very rare in short film productions.
Distribution

In terms of short films, a distributor is an organisation or individual who will represent your film at festivals and markets all around the world and attempt to sell it to television, airlines and other companies that show short films.
The major UK short film distributors are:
  • Dazzle
  • Futureshorts
  • Network Ireland TV
  • Shorts International
For a film to be distributable, you need to make sure you have all the right assets in place. As well as assets, distributors will require a clear paper chain, clear contracts and license deals so that you are legally allowed to sell all the different elements of your film to third parties.

Funding

For production funding on a national level, the first place you should approach is the UK Film Council. They have funding for both production and post - production and also completion finance. The UK Film Council funds many of their short films schemes through the "New Cinema Fund".
